Self Checkout

Yup. That is an accurate representation of the rage those machines frequently induce.
Still usually better than dealing with people though.

And yet, I’m still annoyed that none of the grocery stores around me have self-checkout.

Self checkout: Hire fewer employees, make the customers do the work, pass the savings on to the shareholders.

...or, in the case of an Atlanta Wal Mart, if I’m not mistaken, don’t have enough people on hand to monitor self-check against rampant shoplifting and rip self-check back out again due to losses.
A shame, because the lines there were a lot better when the self check was operative. (Went there regularly
while in school).

I greatly prefer self-check. I’ll admit that not having to deal with a cashier has some appeal (this may not be normal), but the real benefit is decreased wait times. Self-checkout speeds things up significantly.
Stores on the other hand generally hate self-checkout. Like normal express lanes, customers who use self-checkout are often people who come in an buy a small number of items on sale, as opposed to people coming in to do a huge weekly shop, so are worth less (this is also why express lanes tend not to be fast, stores don’t want to encourage this behavior, so they don’t keep enough lanes open. The exception are stores with large prepared food sections, people aren’t going going to buy their (high-margin) lunch at your store if you keep them waiting for 15 minutes at the register). Worse, shop lifting is apparently a huge problem with them.
They may have installed them with the hopes of passing work off on the customer and saving some money, but today many chains see them as a bad deal, and if they keep them, it is because customers want them, not because the store sees them as a great way to cut costs.

Dear god, ours at work do this all the ruddy time, it’s either,
‘un-expected item in the bagging area, please remove the item’,
‘item removed from the bagging area, please replace the item’,
‘please rescan item’,
‘place item aside for approval’* ,
‘unknown item’,
‘scale not working’,
‘please replace the item on the scale’,
etc...
*items requiring approval, high caffeine energy drinks for under 16s, alcohol for under 18s, any knives for under 18s, tabacco for under 18, large amounts of painkillers, etc...

This made me laugh so hard I had to close my office door. I love and hate self-checkout equally.
I have it DOWN because I so often go in for like, 3-5 things. I use apple pay from my watch
,
never bag anything, just pile it all
up until it spits out the receipt. Then I pile it all into a giant bag I keep in my car for this exact purpose. I wonder how many people have been behind me when I’ve
done this, and thought, “hey, he never paid. did he?
”

I like using it at the grocery store when buying just a handful of things. There is a nice big sign you have to walk past that notes it’s existence is just for this purpose. Not waiting on line for someone with two cart s full is duly appreciated.
What I have found to be the key to this working is a free standing register/scanner at the exit. Inevitably there are holdups which can be alleviated just by having one employee who can check people out. People who have no more than will fill a single small bag.

I do use them at Walmart, but I’ve never had problems with them. I have had issues at Giant Eagle (supermarket), mostly w hen buying gift cards (before they had signs informing you to go to a regular line) and light produce (again, more my fault), trying to buy one jalapeno was more difficult than it needed to be.

What confuses me is at meijer there self checkout some how is aware if you double bag an item. Like you take two bags for one item and it will say unexpected item. But both bags came off the scale. I don’t understand. How does it know I used two bags when the only weight that was actually added was the item. Happens every time though, I just stopped double bagging things and hoping my mixed veggies don’t cut a whole in the bag and fall out.

“Not waiting on line for someone with two carts full is duly appreciated.”
Except where I go there are always several people who figure that they can check out two full
carts
faster than the cashier, thereby mucking up the whole system.

Checking out of Walmart is a nightmare, even with self checkout. I detest Walmart.

I don’t dislike self checkout in principle. I think the number of items should be severely limited, though. I used to go to a grocery store with self checkout and people would stand there for half an hour scanning their basketful of groceries. My Costco used to have self checkout, and I loved it. But they removed it.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 14:18 |

I enjoyed that.

I don’t really care about item limits, as long as they provide enough machines. Some people can be tortuously slow even if they have a basket of things. Though it is true that mo st kiosks are designed for people who aren’t bagging that much stuff. When they were first being deployed, my local Giant had ones that were actually full sized conveyor belts, so they could handle a full load if you wanted to, and Giant generally did have at least one bagger servicing the cluster so that some or even all of your stuff might be bagged by the time you finished scanning and paying.

I’ve stopped going. It takes too much time with the long checkout or the messed up self check out. But I do encourage you to go to the Daytona Beach Walmart during the Daytona 500 weekend to people watch.

i keep an account at chase, just for my online parts ordering (i have a serious distrust of using my bank card anywhere) so i find out how much my parts are going to be, load the card at the atm, and send off for the parts , that way i dont have a mess of money laying around for someone to theft from an account, or double charge, or overcharge, or fee tack on ...... works out decent.

Sort of like living in TX. The absolute best time to go to the grocery store is on Sunday during a Cowboys game. The place is empty.
